Hal Roach Studios, a 14.5 acre studio once known as "The Lot of Fun," once contained 55 buildings and churned out over 50 comedy shorts a year. It was home to Harold Lloyd, Laurel & Hardy, and Our Gang. In a 1990 interview, the then 98 year old Hal Roach declared Harold Lloyd was "the best comedian, second only to Chaplin." Indeed it was Lloyd's popularity that financed much of Roach's studio.
The studio was torn down in 1963. Today, Culver City's "Landmark Street" runs down what was the middle of the old studio lot, with the two original sound stages having been located on the north side of Landmark Street.
Dutch film historian Piet Schreuders consulted historical records to recreate Culver City and Roach Studios as they looked in their heyday.
